Entry Requirements: No previous qualifications are required to take this qualification. However, as this is a level 4 qualification, it is recommend that the learner has studied at level 3 previously and holds at least a level 2 English Language qualification. You will be required, at level 4, to read, research, and reference accordingly.

Minimum Age: 18 Years

Pre-requisites: You will need access to a school or pre-school setting to carry out practical activities with children

Become a specialist in your school or nursery setting in Phonics and Early Reading, taking a lead in the development of phonics interventions and strategies to develop early reading within your work.

This qualification is ideal for both our Early Years Educator learners and our Supporting Teaching and Learning learners who wish to gain a deeper understanding of language acquisition, early reading development, and skills to teach phonics lessons within their own settings.

Ideal for anyone wishing to gain an understanding of the acquisition of language and the development of literacy skills in children, this qualification explores the development of phonetics and a range of phonetic teaching and intervention strategies and a further delve into the development of early reading and how to support this in practice.

The course allows you to develop and implement strategies in phonics and early reading, that you can take with you into your practice, developing your skills as a specialist in this area.

Our qualification has been developed to meet the specific needs of our learners and has been accredited by NCFE demonstrating the quality and rigour.
 
NCFE is an awarding organisation recognised by the qualification regulators for England (Ofqual), Wales (Qualifications Wales) and Northern Ireland (CCEA Regulation). This is an unregulated qualification and is not a nationally recognised qualification. This qualification has been accredited as a Customised Qualification and we have benchmarked the qualification’s learning outcomes and assessment criteria at Level (using a national framework’s level descriptors) to allow you to demonstrate the difficulty and depth of study. On completion of the Customised Qualification, learners will receive a certificate of achievement. The certificate is evidence of the knowledge and skills gained by completing the qualification. This qualification has been accredited by NCFE under the Customised Qualification and the certificate of achievement will be issued directly by NCFE.

Learners will need access to a suitable placement - as a volunteer or in a paid environment - to enable them to carry out strategies in phonics and early reading for unit 4 of the qualification.
This level 4 diploma qualification is made up of four mandatory units, as follows:

Unit 1: Phonics for Early Reading Development

  • understand the principles of phonics
  • evaluate a range of methods for teaching phonics
  • understand the phonics in the context of relevant curricula
  • understand the technical elements of phonics
  • understand how to plan a phonics teaching session
Unit 2: Understanding Reading Development

  • understand how to support pre- and emergent reading
  • understand how to support early reading
  • understand how to support progressive reading
  • understand how to support exploratory and transitional reading
  • understand how to support independent reading

Unit 3: English Language and Acquisition

  • understand concepts in language acquisition
  • understand theoretical perspectives of language acquisition
  • apply theory to practice

Unit 4: Implement Practical Methods in Phonics and Early Reading

  • plan a phonics session
  • implement a phonics session
  • implement a range of practical methods for reading and writing development
This course is ideal for teaching assistants and HLTAs looking to progress as a specialist in phonics and early reading within their own setting. Completion of this qualification will support applications for new roles and responsibilities within your own or other settings.
