Key Facts
This programme aims to develop skilled, reflective, and ethical practitioners who can support the health and wellbeing of families through personalised, evidence-informed coaching in nutrition, physical activity, and holistic health behaviours. Learners will be empowered to offer preventative, inclusive, and culturally responsive support that enables long-term health changes for children, parents, and carers alike.

Upon completion, you will leave with a strong grounding in the physiological, psychological, and behavioural aspects of family wellbeing, and the coaching tools necessary to support real-world change.

Upon completion of the diploma, learners will be able to:

  • Promote Holistic Family Health: Develop integrated strategies to support balanced nutrition, physical activity, and overall wellbeing across all stages of family life.
  • Address Common Health Challenges: Apply current knowledge to help families prevent and manage issues such as obesity, malnutrition, and inactivity.
  • Enhance Behaviour Change Skills: Use coaching models and behavioural science to support families in achieving sustainable lifestyle changes.
  • Support Diverse and Inclusive Needs: Adapt coaching approaches to meet the cultural, social, and health-specific needs of diverse families.
  • Encourage Preventative Health and Early Intervention: Empower families to make proactive health choices that reduce the risk of chronic illness and improve long-term wellbeing.
  • Apply Ethical and Professional Practice: Work within clear ethical, legal, and professional boundaries, including safeguarding, consent, and appropriate referral.
  • Design and Deliver Family Health Coaching Programmes: Create, implement, and evaluate personalised health coaching plans tailored to each family’s unique goals and circumstances.
  • Build a Successful Coaching Practice: Develop the business, marketing, and operational skills needed to run an ethical and sustainable coaching service.
  • Engage in Ongoing Professional Development: Commit to reflective practice, continued learning, and active participation in professional networks and supervision.

Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate from the Skills and Education Group's Quality Licence Scheme, one of the UK's largest Ofqual regulated awarding organisations, and the opportunity to become a member of the professional coaching and psychotherapy body, the ACCPH. Additionally, you will receive automatic entry to the Association of Child and Family Coaches (ACFC), fully meeting their ethical framework. With the qualification and membership, you will be entitled to apply for professional insurance with Westminster Indemnity, allowing you to work as a Therapeutic Coach or Practitioner with your own Therapy or Coaching Practice Setting.

This is an incredible opportunity for existing coaches or therapists to add play to their toolkit, or for those interested in starting their own coaching or therapeutic practice in play-based therapies.

Syllabus

Unit 1: Foundations of Family NutritionThis unit provides learners with a comprehensive grounding in nutritional science as it relates to family wellbeing across the lifespan. Learners will examine the components of a balanced diet, including the roles of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) in supporting physical development, immunity, and mental health. The course explores how dietary needs differ between children, adults, and older family members, taking into account changing nutritional requirements at each life stage. Learners will critically evaluate the impact of poor nutrition on family health, including the rise of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, anaemia, and malnutrition. Sociocultural and economic influences on eating patterns are considered, including food insecurity, cultural dietary traditions, and the effects of convenience food and advertising. Practical application is a central focus, with learners developing the ability to assess family needs and create sustainable, accessible, and culturally appropriate meal plans.

Unit 2: Physical Activity and its Role in Family HealthIn this unit, learners explore the essential role physical activity plays in preventing disease, supporting emotional wellbeing, and fostering healthy relationships within families. The unit begins with an exploration of government and public health guidelines for physical activity across different age groups and examines the consequences of sedentary lifestyles. Learners will consider the physical, psychological, and developmental benefits of exercise, including improved sleep, mood regulation, stress reduction, and stronger cardiovascular health. The course will analyse common barriers to physical activity, such as time limitations, lack of motivation, or accessibility concerns. Strategies for overcoming these barriers are discussed, along with ways to embed movement into daily family life. Learners will gain the skills to design bespoke activity programmes that are realistic, inclusive, and responsive to special needs, chronic illness, and neurodivergent profiles. The use of technology (apps, wearable devices, online challenges) as a motivational tool is also explored.

Unit 3: Communication as a Family CoachEffective communication underpins successful health coaching. This unit equips learners with the advanced interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills needed to build trust and rapport with families. Learners will explore a range of communication techniques used in coaching, such as active listening, reflective responses, and the use of open-ended questioning. The course considers how non-verbal communication, tone, and presence affect the coaching dynamic, and learners will critically evaluate scenarios where communication either facilitated or hindered a family’s progress. There is a strong emphasis on empathy and cultural sensitivity, ensuring learners can communicate authentically while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Learners will also reflect on the communication needs of different family members (e.g., children, caregivers, teenagers) and how to adapt their style to ensure inclusivity and psychological safety in sessions.

Unit 4: Health Coaching Strategies for FamiliesThis unit introduces the foundational models and methods of health coaching and their application in a family context. Learners will examine the role of the health coach in empowering families to set and achieve their own goals, exploring the use of motivational interviewing, behaviour change models (such as the Transtheoretical Model), and SMART goal setting. The unit focuses on how to facilitate long-term behaviour change by supporting intrinsic motivation and helping families identify their own solutions. Learners will consider common challenges to habit change in the home environment, including inconsistent routines, competing demands, and low confidence. Attention is given to the importance of working with – rather than against – family dynamics, including sibling influence, parenting styles, and household structures. Learners will also explore how to identify and challenge unhelpful patterns compassionately, while maintaining a non-directive, strengths-based coaching stance.

Unit 5: Ethics and Professional PracticeIn this unit, learners examine the ethical foundations of health coaching practice, with a particular focus on working with children, parents, and families. The course introduces key ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, and learners will explore how these principles apply in real-life coaching contexts. Learners will explore the importance of consent, confidentiality, safeguarding, and professional boundaries, particularly when working with emotionally vulnerable clients or in home-based coaching scenarios. The unit includes reflection on the limits of a coach’s role and when to refer families to medical, psychological, or specialist services. Ethical dilemmas are analysed in depth, including balancing parental expectations with a child’s best interests, managing conflicting family values, and dealing with resistance or emotional disclosure in a professional and trauma-informed manner. The importance of self-awareness, supervision, and reflective practice in ethical decision-making is emphasised throughout.

Unit 6: Family Health Coaching ProgrammesThis practical unit guides learners through the process of designing, delivering, and evaluating structured family health coaching interventions. Learners will develop the skills to conduct holistic assessments of family health needs, identifying specific goals relating to nutrition, activity, emotional wellbeing, and lifestyle patterns. The course provides a framework for co-creating action plans that align with the family’s values, schedules, and practical circumstances. Learners will also learn how to motivate family members to engage, including age-appropriate techniques to involve children and teenagers. Case studies are used to illustrate different models of delivery, including 1:1, group, and online sessions. Challenges such as disengagement, relapse, and internal family conflict are discussed, with learners developing adaptable strategies to support progress while maintaining a trauma-informed approach. Finally, learners explore how to evaluate the effectiveness of programmes using both qualitative (feedback, self-reports) and quantitative (goal tracking, health indicators) methods.

Unit 7: Business Skills for Family Health CoachesThis unit focuses on the business and operational knowledge required to establish and sustain a successful coaching practice. Learners will explore the steps to registering a coaching business, selecting a business structure (sole trader, limited company), and understanding tax and regulatory obligations within the UK context. Emphasis is placed on developing a clear brand identity and unique selling proposition (USP), aligned with personal values and target audiences. Learners will develop marketing strategies using both digital and offline methods, including social media, community outreach, content marketing, and word-of-mouth referral. The unit also explores pricing, budgeting, financial planning, and basic operations such as scheduling, client onboarding, and record-keeping. Through practical assignments, learners will create business and marketing plans and reflect on the sustainability and ethics of their business model. Real-life coaching business case studies are included for analysis and inspiration.

Unit 8: Professional Development and NetworkingThe final unit highlights the importance of lifelong learning and professional connectedness in maintaining high standards of practice. Learners will explore a range of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities, from attending conferences and workshops to engaging in academic reading, supervision, and peer learning networks. The unit explores how to plan short- and long-term development goals and build professional habits around reflection and self-evaluation. Learners will also examine the role of professional associations, online learning platforms, and collaborative spaces in enhancing their knowledge and confidence. There is particular focus on how to build a professional presence within the health coaching field, maintain wellbeing as a practitioner, and stay responsive to changes in public health, child wellbeing, and nutritional research. This unit encourages learners to view themselves as both practitioners and advocates for positive change in family health.
