The Level 3 Certificate in Sand Tray Play Interventions is designed for educators, therapeutic practitioners, and childcare practitioners working with children and young people. This qualification equips learners with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to facilitate sand tray play as a tool for therapeutic and educational purposes. Sand tray play is a powerful, non-verbal intervention that helps children express emotions, resolve conflicts, and enhance cognitive and emotional development through the creation of symbolic scenes.
Entry Requirements: While there are no formal prerequisites, experience working with children or young people is required, and learners should have access to a voluntary or paid placement for practical work.

Unit 1: Introduction to Sand Tray Play and Its Theoretical FoundationsThis unit introduces the history, evolution, and theoretical foundations of sand tray play. Learners will explore the role of symbolism and metaphor in sand tray play, along with the psychological theories that underpin its use in both therapeutic and educational settings. Ethical considerations for using sand tray play with children will also be covered.
Unit 2: Techniques and Applications of Sand Tray Play in Therapeutic SettingsLearners will explore the practical applications of sand tray play, learning how to set up and manage sand tray environments and facilitate sand tray sessions. The unit focuses on how sand tray play can support emotional expression and cognitive development in children, adolescents, and adults.
Unit 3: Using Sand Tray Play for Learning and Developmental InterventionsThis unit focuses on using sand tray play as an educational tool. Learners will understand how sand tray play supports cognitive and emotional development and how to design educational interventions using sand tray techniques. It also covers working with parents and educators to promote the use of sand tray play in learning environments.
This qualification prepares learners to effectively use sand tray play in diverse settings, supporting the holistic development of children and young people.

This qualification has been accredited as a Customised Qualification and we have benchmarked the qualification’s learning outcomes and assessment criteria at Level (using a national framework’s level descriptors) to allow you to demonstrate the difficulty and depth of study. On completion of the Customised Qualification, learners will receive a certificate of achievement. The certificate is evidence of the knowledge and skills gained by completing the qualification.
