The Level 2 Award in Sensory Play with Babies and Children is designed for parents, carers, early years practitioners, and anyone working with young children. This qualification provides essential knowledge and practical skills needed to plan, facilitate, and evaluate sensory play activities. Sensory play is a crucial tool for promoting the holistic development of babies and young children, and this course offers participants the opportunity to understand its benefits and application.

During the qualification, leanrners will:

  • Understand the importance of sensory play in the development of babies and young children.
  • Equip learners with practical skills to plan and facilitate sensory play activities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of sensory play in supporting children’s holistic development.
  • Promote collaboration with parents and caregivers to extend sensory play at home.

:Unit 1: Introduction to Sensory Play in Early ChildhoodThis unit introduces learners to the foundational principles of sensory play, its role in child development, and the different types of sensory play activities. Learners will gain an understanding of the developmental milestones supported by sensory play and learn how to create safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate sensory environments.
  • Learning Outcomes:
    1. Understand the importance of sensory play in child development.
    2. Understand the different types of sensory play and their applications.
    3. Understand safety considerations and best practices in sensory play

Unit 2: Planning and Facilitating Sensory Play ActivitiesIn this unit, learners will explore how to design and implement sensory play activities that align with children’s developmental goals. It covers practical guidance on adapting sensory activities to individual children’s needs and engaging children in meaningful sensory experiences. Learners will also learn how to assess the impact of sensory play activities.
  • Learning Outcomes:
    1. Be able to design age-appropriate sensory play activities for babies and young children
    2. Be able to facilitate sensory play activities
    3. Be able to evaluate the effectiveness of sensory play activities in supporting child development

This qualification serves as a pre-requisite for the Level 3 Instructor programme, equipping learners with the knowledge and practical experience to move into more advanced areas of child development and play facilitation.

NCFE is an awarding organisation recognised by the qualification regulators for England (Ofqual), Wales (Qualifications Wales) and Northern Ireland (CCEA Regulation). This is an unregulated qualification and is not a nationally recognised qualification. This qualification has been accredited as a Customised Qualification and we have benchmarked the qualification’s learning outcomes and assessment criteria at Level (using a national framework’s level descriptors) to allow you to demonstrate the difficulty and depth of study. On completion of the Customised Qualification, learners will receive a certificate of achievement. The certificate is evidence of the knowledge and skills gained by completing the qualification. This qualification has been accredited by NCFE under the Customised Qualification and the certificate of achievement will be issued directly by NCFE.
