Course Title: Access to Higher Education Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health

Awarding Organisation: Open Awards and QAA (The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education)

Access Credits: 60 credits, of which 45 are graded at Referred, Pass, Merit, or Distinction

Entry Requirements: Maths and English at Level 2 or above, or willingness to enrol on a level 2 Maths and English programmes (with us or another institution)

Limitations: This course is only available to learners in England

Course Length: The course is spread across one academic year, you can start learning at any month of the year. The Awarding Board and results are released twice per year

Induction Skills Block:
Introduction to Biology
Introduction to Chemistry
Use of Number: Number and Algebra

Within this induction block, which you will complete during your month of joining, you will complete a range of introductory level units to help you gain the initial knowledge and skills in science and Maths before your embark upon your qualification. 

Upon completion of the block, you will:

Understand the characteristics and variety of living organisms
Understand the structure and function of animal and plant cells
​Understand the nature of some metabolic processes in living organisms
Understand some of the interrelationships between living organisms
​Understand basic principles of cell division, inheritance and natural selection
Understand atomic structure
Understand the periodic table and chemical bonds
Understand chemical reactions and balanced chemical equations
Understand the factors affecting the rate of a reaction
Understand integers, decimals, place value and the basic language used to describe numbers
​Understand and use number operations observing order of precedence
Understand decimals and fractions and the relationships between them
Understand the relationship between fractions and percentages and the practical uses of percentages
​Understand some of the practical uses of algebra and graphs

ACADEMIC PAUSE - GRADING

Nursing, Midwifery, and allied health professional roles are some of the most in-demand and rewarding careers that you can enter. To enter these professions you will need a qualifying degree, which offers registration to practice. Universities will have a range of access requirements, but as a minimum, you will need to be able to demonstrate academic ability in sciences and health studies- especially in biology and social sciences. 

All our Access to Higher Education Diplomas are studied remotely and online, so you can study flexibly around your life. The course is structured and with 'face to face' tutor support, just like being in a college. ​

This qualification contains a range of carefully selected modules, covering cell biology, public health care, anatomy and physiology, sexual and reproductive health, health promotion, and ethics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to prepare for your applications for university and an understanding of professional values, roles, and relationships within the sector. 

When studying with NCCE, you will be provided with a structured learning plan to follow. You will have access to taught sessions, 121 sessions with your tutor, interactive learning resources, and swift marking turnaround times of 3-5 days. 

Upon completion of this qualification, with minimum grades at merit and distinction, you can apply for a range of professional training degrees in nursing and Midwifery. 

Please select your University of choice to ensure acceptance on their programme within their minimum entry requirements. 

Some opportunities selected for you to review

Nursing with specialisms in Children's Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Adult Nursing, or Learning Disability Nursing at Sheffield Hallam University: L2/4 GCSE Maths, English or Functional Skills at Level 2. Science GCSE or A2HE credits x 15 in science or health subjects.

Midwifery at Sheffield Hallam University: GCSE Maths and English at C/4 or above OR equivalency testing- no Functional Skills. Science - Access to HE with 15 credits from Health and Science related subjects

Nursing (Adult, Child, or Mental Health) at University of Derby: ​UoD GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 or L2 (Functional Skills) equivalent. Access to HE qualification.
