Minimum Age: 16 Years

Pre-requisites: This qualification is suitable for those with a level 3 STL/S qualification or experienced teaching assistants looking to develop. Voluntary or employed work in a school environment is required to complete the qualification. 

Duration: Total qualification time is 360 hours. Enrolment period is for up to 12 months.

This qualification is aimed at learners employed in a teaching assistant role who wish to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant. 

You may want to think about getting your English and Maths qualifications to if you do not have a Grade C in English and Maths. We can offer Functional Skills as part of your course, if you wish to up skill in these areas.
This qualification is aimed at learners employed in a teaching assistant role who wish to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant. 

This qualification is aimed at learners employed in a teaching assistant role who wish to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant status. The purpose is to develop learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to address the challenges that they meet in their workplace. They will also develop an understanding of the knowledge required to support individuals and small groups and to support individuals with a range of additional needs.
This course requires you to understake a placement of 100 hours, within which you will be able to learn and demonstrate your skills of learning support within an educational establishment. 

Your placement needs to be within a school, college or training environment within Key Stages 1-5 or in the the EYFS.

Don't worry if you do not have a placement right away. You can enjoy the learning experience and then put your knowledge into action at any point through the programme.

The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Certificate course is broken into 6 units, as follows. Blocks are independent from one another, and each will contain learning, assessment material and the opportunity to complete live teaching sessions with your tutor. Each unit is designed to be studied over 6 weeks, but this structured approach is not compulsory and you may work at a speed 


Unit 1: Understand the Higher Level Teaching Assistant role 

Unit 2: Child Development and Welfare

Unit 3: Awareness of Special Educational Needs


Unit 4: Promoting positive behaviour in children and young people 

Unit 5: Providing support for individual learners and small groups

Unit 6: Developing skills to promote positive working relationships

Unit 7: Curriculum planning, delivery and assessment 


Placement Activities: You will complete a placement log for 100 hours, a practice record and also plan a range of activities that you can complete with the children. If you are employed, a contract can be used as evidence instead of a placement log.


PDP and CPD: You will complete a Personal Development Plan and Create a Continuing Professional Development 

Practical evidence will be signed off by a suitably qualified mentor within your setting. A final professional discussion will also be conducted with your NCCE Assessor. ​
As well as progression in employment, you may wish to progress to a teaching qualification such as:
Level 3 Award/ Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training
TQUK Level 5 Diploma in Education Studies
